A Look at Northern Cyprus

With over 300 days of sunshine a year and temperatures reaching into the 70’s as early as March, Northern Cyprus boasts one of the best climates in Europe and has something to offer everyone.

History

Perhaps the last unspoiled destination to be found anywhere in the Mediterranean, Northern Cyprus boasts the most beautiful beaches and coves on the island and offers a true taste of history with its rich archeological and cultural mix of contributions from the Romans, Ancient Greeks, Venetians, Turks and even the British. Historical treasures date back to as early as 7000 BC with artefacts found in cave dwellings and include ruins from ancient civilisations, medieval fortress walls and castles and even a 2300 year old ship wreck.

Beaches

The beaches of Northern Cyrpus are one of the main attractions of this part of the island, and vary widely in character from busy hotel beaches, which offer many facilities, to secluded stretches of sand (such as those you can find in the Karpaz, where you may have an entire beach to yourself). Most of the beaches near and around Villa Sari are well maintained sandy beaches with lounges and paracols, cafes or restaurants, some also offering water sports activities.

The Karpaz Peninsula

On the island’s ‘panhandle’ is an area of truly outstanding natural beauty that today has only a few tiny villages but which is littered with ancient churches, monasteries, basilicas and the once-important Roman city of Karpasia from which the area derives its name. Also famous for its loggerhead and green turtles which can be seen nesting on the beaches around Kyrenia, along the remote Karpaz Peninsula and in Famagusta Bay from May onwards. It is a wonderful sight to see them nesting or hatching with one of the organised trips with the Turtle Watch Team.

Activities

A whole variety of watersports are available at many of the beaches and diving tuition can be found at a number of the hotels. Northern Cyprus is one of the newest destinations for diving in the Mediterranean and its popularity is growing, as more and more divers come to explore the crystal clear waters with their unspoilt natural fauna. The warm sea temperatures also provide for a long diving season which starts in April and stretches through to Christmas.

Shopping

As in Turkey, Northern Cyprus is an exciting place to go shopping where you can test your bargaining skills with shop keepers or find some designer labels at prices to impress. Traditional Turkish goods can also be found in many shops and make great souvenirs to bring back home.

Eating Out

Another favourite passtime of those visiting Northern Cyprus is enjoying the fresh food and friendly atmosphere. Relatively inexpensive, there is a wealth of restaurants from which to choose, offering international delicacies to unique local cuisine. Most restaurants welcome you with a complimentary messe and like to see you off with a small glass of liquor, compliments of the house. Many restaurants are along the seaside, offering beautiful views and tranquil surroundings.

The People

And finally, the people of Northern Cyprus reflect the sunny and warm disposition of the island. With their warm friendliness and hospitality, these people are always happy to make you feel welcome and at home.

So step back in time and enjoy all the wonderful things this part of the island has to offer.
